Even though it's winter and grass growth has slowed, there are some things that can help keep your lawn in good condition through the cooler months. Winter is a great time to take care of any required maintenance on retic and mowing equipment to help make sure everything is in good working order for Spring.
Weeds
Weeds will be more prevalent in winter as they compete with your lawn for nutrients. You can choose to remove weeds by hands if manageable, preferably before they have a chance to seed. Otherwise, weed killers for broadleaf weeds such as Bindi and Clover can be used when rain isn't on the horizon. Managing lawn weeds throughout the winter months is very important to help prevent them from seeding uncontrollably in the warmer months. Winter Grass, needs to be eradicated using a specialised Winter Grass Killer.
Weeds can still take hold in Artificial Lawn during the winter months, so it is important to ensure that you remove any leaves, debris or rotting organic waste from the surface of your artificial lawn so that weed seeds can't easily sprout. Insects and birds can drop seeds on this debris, or the wind can blow weed seeds from neighbouring grass. You can use a light rake, brush or air blower to clear away any debris to prevent any weed growth. Small weeds can be gently removed, but any weeds that have spread deeper, are best eradicated with a gentle weed killer that is safe to use on Artificial Lawn.
Mowing
The lawn will need mowing a lot less often in Winter due to slower growth, but it is important to not leave it too long in between mows to help prevent scalping of the lawn which causes browning. It is important to raise the height of the mower blades during Winter.
Watering & Compaction
During Winter, Sprinklers should be turned off from the 1st June - 31st August every year, watering should only be on an as-need basis. Compaction can be an issue in high traffic areas and sections of the lawn that have poor drainage. Aerating the lawn is important to improve compacted areas.
Fertiliser
It is important to fertilise well before the winter months in Autumn to help the lawn get through the colder months. If you choose to fertilise your lawn during Winter, it needs to be a lawn fertiliser high in iron, specialised for use in the Winter months.
Wetting Agent
Wetting agents applied during Winter can help with soil drainage throughout the raining season. It is recommended to apply a wetting agent at the end of Winter to help prepare the soil for the warmer weather.
Shade
Trim large trees and plants during the winter months to help sunlight reach grassed areas.
Fungus
During the cold and wet winter months, lawn is more prone to developing fungal growth. Anti-fungal lawn treatments are available. Good drainage and aeration of lawns during the winter months help prevent fungal growth in grass.
The good thing about Winter is that Spring is just around the corner! Your lawn will thank you for any extra care you can provide it during the harsh winter months.
